Therapies

Every day we become more aware of the inter-dependence of all of the therapies in existence today.  One is often very much dependent on another.  For example it has been proven that traditional medical intervention at the same time as meditation is the most effective way of treating brain injury. That's a real example of 'East meets West'!

 

There's also an overlap between many of these therapies and our description of them and the images attempt to prtray flexibility and fluidity between one modality and another.

    Biologically-based Therapies

    Emotional/Cognitive Therapies
    aptchardsThese are the therapies that involve talking, reading, counselling, coaching, understanding, crying, bibliotherapy...  Cognitive refers to our 'thinking' rather than to an intervention such as a pill and includes speech therapy and APT or attention process training.  

    Energy Medicine
    handsEnergy medicine centers around the ancient belief that various 'chi' circulates within the body and  most disease is a result of blocks to the free flow of this energy.  Acupuncture, traditional Chinese Medicine, Healing Touch, Reiki and many other forms of healing belong to this group.

    Holistic Medicine (Mind-Body Medicine)
    handmirrorThese therapies are centered around the belief that the body and the mind are both part of the same 'system' and that one can affect the other.  Healing takes account of the merging of body and mind, such as Ayurveda, Aexander Technique, this unique hand-mirror and Spiritual Medicines.

    Movement/Joy
    exerciseThese therapies involve moving the body ourselves as opposed to having it moved for us as in massage.  It also includes activities which bring a sense of peace and joy to us such as dance, pilates, meditation or yoga.

    Musculoskeletal Therapies
    chirocatThese therapies include massage, chiropractic and osteopathy and involve a therapist manipulating our soft tissue or spinal column with their hands or with mechanical vibration.
