Whatever way you look at it, diet alone just doesn't quite 'do it' in today's world. Somehow we have to fortify our bodies to withstand an onslaught of pollution – they even found increased levels of radiation in reindeer up at the North Pole many years after the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl blew - and deal with the everyday stresses of modern life. Let alone whilst we rebuild from serious trauma.
In addition to our bodies havingto do more, suddenly, our food is lower in essential nutrients than it was in previous years. Perhaps because the plants also have been countering the effect of the pollution? I don’t know… I do know that a carrot grown and tested today will have significantly less vitamin A, for example, than it did 40 years ago. Or even 20 years ago.
It's been proven that there is a much increased need for nutritional support whenever the body encounters stress – physical or emotional. A good multivitamin and multimineral makes an enormous difference. And taking vitamins is something you can do easily and at any stage of your recovery.
An excellent book on this subject written by another brilliant woman named Adelle Davis (my neuropsychologist was also Adelle!) This book is old - very old - and the then cutting edge information in it is is tried and true today. It's called ‘Lets Get Well’ by Adelle Davis - I love this lady’s clear and honest style of writing – it’s a very informative book on basic supplementation. Adelle Davis’ legacy is celebrated today as ‘the first lady of nutrition whose writings are the foundation of health.”
I have read literally thousands of books and articles on the subject of vitamins, minerals and supplements since I first read this book 25 years ago (I remember the year because my son Ben was a toddler and kept hiding my book!) I have found nothing to contradict Adelle Davis - and not that much that has changed at a basic level. It was thanks to this most valuable knowledge that I recovered as well as I did.
For the entire year before my injury I had read and learned everything Adelle Davis wrote about vitamins and supplements and without that knowledge I would almost certainly still be in a wheelchair. Sure I have needed other therapies - there are so many 'out there'... Where to start?
Here. This is the perfect first step. A perfect foundation on which to build. Without these basic supplements I would not have been well - or strong - enough to take my first step.
If possible, I recommend Usana vitamins and supplements. They are the highest quality available, bar none. However, I also talk about the actual vitamins that are so needed and you can then buy locally to you. With vitamins you often do get exactly what you pay for: it is important that the tablets you buy dissolve easily and are bio-available so that your body can easily absorb them. Certain vitamins and minerals need to be paired with others in order that the body can use them and I will explain this more later. There is another page (coming soon) which details which vitamins are needed and for what.
My health today is still fragile, over twenty years after my accident. Having said that, so long as I respect my body and take care of it, I enjoy excellent health. I still experiment to check whether I need the same level of support but everytime I stop taking the basic vitamins I become easily exhausted and within a week I break out in acne and catch every bug going.
Basic vitamins, my zapper, clean water and exercise are what keep me healthy. I have tried almost every gadget and natural health-food supplement available and many do help a little. But these 4 staples - a good basic multi-vitamin, my zapper, clean water and exercise - are the foundation of my health, without which I quickly spiral down and get sick. And like my neuropsychologist Adele Hern said, my elastic is overstretched! It takes me ages to bounce back.
The first thing I did as soon as I was well enough (caregivers can do it for their loved ones) was to put myself on a regime of supplements. I truly need these supplements in order to keep working and exercising and staying as well as I do. Caregivers - please remember that this is almost certainly your trauma too. The same basic supplements and care will also support your body while you care for your loved one.
When I had my car accident in 2006 I was bedridden for much of the time in the first year and it would have been so easy to stop taking my supplements: nothing seemed to be helping anyway. I was scared (of the unknown) – nothing I had learned seemed to work. It took a whole year of perseverance, along with several other therapies (neuro-rehab including speech therapy (I didn't know I needed it), occupational therapy (helped me find goals and confidence), listening therapy (deceptively amazing), attention process training or APT (really works), acupuncture therapy (useful), chiropractic (a 4-weekly essential for me) and therapeutic massage therapy (another 4 weekly essential that actually cured my migraines) and some traditional care from my family doctor to finally start to get well again.
When I was plunged back to where I was physically when I began my struggle over 25 years before - and when I realized that there was still little help available - that's when I decided that I had to find a way to make all this knowledge available to everyone who needed it. ReBuildingYou was born: so that, with the internet, we could share our knowledge, freely. Make this your website too and share what you learn with others. Send me your articles and I will edit them (if necessary and with your permission) and publish them here - including links to your own pages.
Good luck!
